Before your first electrolysis appointment , please read this:

Electrolysis is still the only one FDA approved permanent method of hair removal and has been used for over 125 years. It is safe and effective for all hair colors and skin types.

However, it is important to understand that the treatment works on ACTIVELY growing hairs and follicles and not on any that are dormant. As our body reacts to situations such as hormones, medications, weight, our hair growth pattern changes and may activate dormant hair follicles. For this reason, it will require multiple sessions to complete a course of treatment.

The total number of treatments will vary according to medical conditions, age, skin and hair type among individuals. Generally, electrolysis results are noticeable within 3 months and can take 12 to 24 months for completion.

During an electrolysis treatment session, a trained electrologist inserts a thin needle, called a probe, into an individual hair follicle and a small amount of current is delivered to the root of the follicle to destroy it, so future hair growth cannot occur.

Everyone has a different tolerance level. Modern electrolysis methods can be described as causing a tingling or warming sensation, each insertion is kind of a ”mini burn”. After your treatment it is common to experience redness and swelling. Scabbing is also common, so be patient with your post-treatment care. These are natural reactions from the stimulus applied to the follicle and can be eased with the use of an ice pack, witch hazel, or aloe vera gel.

Please read and follow the Pre- Electrolysis and Post-Electrolysis Care Instructions carefully.

Electrolysis requires commitment, but the results make it well worth it.

PRE-ELECTROLYSIS CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Allow your hair to grow approximately to 1/8’ or 2-3mm. I need enough length to be able to grab the hair with tweezers. If the hair gets too long in between treatments, you can trim or shave. If you decide to shave the area, do so a few days prior to your appointment.

Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or pluck hairs between treatments.

Daily moisturizing is especially important. Well-hydrated skin helps the probe enter the follicle more smoothly and make treatment more comfortable.

Drink plenty of water 24-48 h before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin and tissue conduct electrical current better than dry/dehydrated tissue, which can help make electrolysis treatment more efficient and comfortable. Dehydrated follicles are much more difficult to treat.

Gently exfoliate before treatment to remove dead skin and debris from the follicle openings, allowing smoother probe insertion. Avoid aggressive exfoliation, and if your skin is sensitive, do not exfoliate immediately before your appointment.

Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours prior to your treatment.

Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, and other irritating products for several days before treatment. I recommend stopping topical retinoids , such as tretinoin (Retin-A) at least one week before electrolysis. If you are taking or have recently taken isotretinoin (Accutane), please inform me and consult your prescribing healthcare provider before electrolysis. Having electrolysis services done while on retinoids could result in permanent pigment changes and scarring. Do not discontinue any prescription medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

Avoid or limit stimulants such as coffee, energy drinks and other sources of caffeine on the day of treatment, as they may increase sensitivity. Some clients notice increased skin or pain sensitivity at certain times during their menstrual cycle. If this applies to you, you may prefer to schedule your appointment when you are less sensitive.

Pain relief & numbing cream If desired, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever approximately 30 minutes before your appointment, provided it is safe and appropriate for you. A topical anesthetic cream, such as 4% lidocaine, may also be applied before treatment. Apply only to clean, intact skin and follow the product label or your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the amount and application time. An occlusive covering topical anesthetic can significantly increase absorption. Always consult your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether a pain reliever or topical anesthetic is safe for you.

Please arrive with the treatment area clean and free of makeup, lotions, oils, deodorant, and other products, unless otherwise instructed.

Electrolysis creates tiny openings in the skin and temporarily disrupts the skin barrier, increasing the risk of infection, irritation, and other complications.

Carefully following these post-treatment instructions is essential for proper healing and minimizing the risk of scarring, hyperpigmentation and other complications.

POST-ELECTROLYSIS CARE INSTRUCTIONS

It is normal for the treated area to be red and slightly swollen after electrolysis. These reactions usually disappear within an hour or two but may last longer for some individuals. Follow these post-treatment care instructions for up to two weeks after each treatment. While the skin is healing, avoid activities that may cause irritation, such as excessive sweating, dirt, or lake swimming.

Apply ice to the treated area as needed to reduce swelling.

Keep the area clean. Cleanse the treated area gently with green soap, Sea Breeze®, Witch hazel and use an appropriate antiseptic such as chlorhexidine, rubbing alcohol or other suitable antiseptics. Some individuals may experience irritation from certain products. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and switch to an alternative product.

If you are prone to acne or other skin infections, to minimize infection in the treated area you may apply an antibiotic cream such as Neosporin®, Bacitracin® on the evening following treatment. Always consult your healthcare provider before.

Keep the area moisturized. After cleansing, apply a light moisturizer such as: Pure aloe vera gel, Eucerin® Original Healing Soothing Repair Cream, another lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Apply 2 - 3 times during the first day after treatment, or as needed. Avoid oily, heavily fragranced, or irritating skincare products.

DO NOT TOUCH. Bacteria are present on our hands and everyday surfaces. Touching the treated skin unnecessarily can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of irritation, breakouts, or infection. Only touch the area with thoroughly washed hands.

DO NOT SCRATCH Itching a few days after treatment is a normal part of the healing process and is caused by temporary inflammation. Avoid scratching the area, as doing so can increase irritation, redness, and the risk of scarring. If itching is bothersome, consider an over-the-counter appropriate for you antihistamine or a 1% Hydrocortisone cream, such as Cortaid® or a similar product. They can help reduce redness, swelling, and itching. Always follow the product directions or consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

DO NOT PICK Light scabbing is a natural part of the healing process. Scabs are lymph fluid that has drained from the treated hair follicle and has dried up at the surface. If scabs appear, allow them to fall off naturally. Never pick or remove scabs, as this can cause permanent scarring and pigmentation changes.Keeping the area moisturized may help reduce scab formation and support comfortable healing.

STAY OUT OF THE SUN. The treated skin is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation and sun damage.Avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 whenever the treated area is exposed to sunlight.

AVOID HOT TUBS, SAUNAS, AND POOLS in the first 48 hours. Your pores are open and can easily become infected. AVOID EXERCISING/WORK OUT Excessive sweating can cause bacteria to enter open follicles causing a minor infection, resulting in a breakout.

NO MAKEUP. for 48 hours after electrolysis. Your pores are open and can easily become infected. It is okay to wear eye makeup, but no foundation or powder. Application brushes and sponges are full of bacteria that will cause you to break out. Be sure to wash your application brushes with a proper antimicrobial cleanser prior to resuming your regular makeup routine 48 hours post treatment. If makeup, must be applied, use only fresh, oil-free makeup, purchased within the last 90 days. Avoid any heavy creams for 48 hours.

DO NOT SHAVE. Avoid shaving the area for at least 24-48 hours post treatment. Shaving too soon may Irritate sensitive skin, create microscopic cuts, introduce bacteria into healing follicles, Increase the risk of ingrown hairs. Allow the skin adequate time to heal before shaving.

DO NOT TWEEZE, THREAD, WAX OR PLUCK. Those methods cause trauma inside the follicle, supplying follicle with a nutritious blood source resulting in deeper, thicker regrowth.

KEEP UP WITH A REGULAR TREATMENT SCHEDULE. Keeping on a regular electrolysis maintenance schedule is very important. If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, trim, clip or shave. Treating the new regrowth as soon as it starts to appear, when the roots are not very deep and thick, will result in a more effective treatment. Fine hairs are much easier to treat than those thick deep ones. So be sure to maintain a regular treatment schedule.
